Humane Technology

Hi ,

As you can see, I have a new setup for this monthly newsletter!

I want to give you more value in the form of insights, recommendations, news and tips. It is my fulltime profession (and passion) to learn everything there is about human enhancement. I would love to share this with you on a monthly basis.

And you can also help me out! Let me know something about yourself and why you are interested in Superhuman Talks. You can do so by filling out this short questionnaire (it takes 5 minutes max).

In exchange for your response, I will allot 5 free tickets for the amazing Brave New World Conference, online on November 9th and 10th. Thanks in advance.

And now, enjoy the latest news about human enhancement.

– Peter Joosten Msc.

P.S. I will also be making more videos on my Youtube Channel. Watch my interview with Koen Indesteege about nootropics and BjΓΈrn Ekeberg about infrared light. 🦾

🔮 Deep Dive

"We must be mindful about how we engage with technology: what we use it for, why, and whether it helps or hinders us.”

An important article by Allison Guy appeared on the Next Nature Network. It's about six principles for humane technology. How can we consciously think about how we develop and design technology so that it works with and for us?

The six principles she formulates are not revolutionary, but in my opinion are too often forgotten or pushed aside (for other interests). Among other things, she argues that technology should feel natural, take our human values as a starting point and empower us (instead of outsourcing us as humans).

A bonus with this article are the photos from the series The Man Machine by the French photographer and artist Vincent Fournier. So read and watch!

🔥 Short bites

🧬 Not unexpectedly, Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the design of CRISPR-cas, a method for genetic modification.

💪 A critical article on Slate on biohacking as a hypermasculine and potentially dangerous lifestyle. The author rightly points out that the same type of trends are causing much more controversy among women.

📕 Bill Bryson's book The Body is awesome. In this book, he goes through all parts of the body, with stories from scientists, crazy experiments and descriptions of how ingenious our bodies really are.

🎧 An impressive episode of the Tim Ferriss Show. In this conversation with Debbie Millman, he shares that he was abused as a child, what trauma that caused him, how he found out about it and what he is doing to cope with it. Goosebumps.

🎬 I loved the comedy series Silicon Valley. Episodes of around 20 minutes, many references to real tech companies and relevant issues such as data use and privacy. An 8.5 on IMDB and I totally agree. ;)
